Novi Sad

(Place, tavern, firm, Yugoslavia)

You can find the real life facts anywhere, Novi Sad is very googlable.

To me, it's a place where I spent four years studying maths, and where lots of money from our city goes to die, regardless of the system. It's like a fancy shoe which never really gets broken out, always pinches somewhere. And the attitude of novisadists (as we call them here) is not helping, they seem to think they're somehow better than us from other cities in Vojvodina. Better off they are, for sure.

The above paragraph is the opinion from the period up to the eighties, mostly for two reasons - that the novisader youth were really dicking it out and full of themselves as soon as they step out of their city limits, which I've seen many times at various competitions, festivals, even at seaside, they considered everyone else a backwater which can't even come close to them in any way. There were exceptions to that, of course.

The other reason is that all our local politicians were marrying maidens, trying to get wed to Novi Sad at least, if Belgrade may be unreachable, and for that they gave dowry: they'd vote for some investment to be redirected there and not here, by which they'd secure themselves a position (and apartment) there. So it happened that the oil refinery was built there, despite all of our oil being on this side of Tisa. Long did it last, when it was bombed in 1999 it was never rebuilt.

After the eighties I had very scarce contact with them, the last time being something in 1989, and almost nothing afterwards. Thereabouts the culture changed, who knows, and ever since then I don't remember meeting anyone who'd fit the description from the beginning of this article. Not to forget that the spirit of blockade fits perfectly in that paradigm shift.
