28-IX-1984.

Some time in the afternoon I said farewell to my girls and walked to the bus station. Took a bus to Belgrade, bought a railway ticket to Zagreb and then looked around for something to eat. Just to be on the safe side, I got there a bit early. You don't get onto a country-wide quiz by not knowing your way with trains and buses. So I got a train which would leave around 22:00 and arrive at 6:30 or so, with a seat in the sleeping car. I guess I ate something in a lepinja, some grilled ground meat, and went to a nicer place around Balkanska street, I guess it was a hotel, to have a špricer. Happened to meat a student couple from East Germany, who were studying in Timişoara (we spell it Temišvar, Hungarians spell it Temesvár*), in Romania. They have a car, and to avoid having to actually import the car into Romania and pay all the customs, the car has to get out of the country every two monts. They usually go to Belgrade for that, to have some fun.

After a couple of drinks I went to catch my train. The bed was fine, and the next morning I felt quite fresh.

* But it's called so after the river Timiş (timmish), which we call Tamiš (it flows in here from Romania, into Tisa about halfway between here and Belgrade), so why is it Temišvar and not Tamišvar? And, besides, Timiş does not flow through it, it's the same river as here.

Found it later - it did flow through town once, but after some extensive digging, they diverted it to flow around and brought Begej instead.
