predvojnička

(Translation, Yugoslavia)

"Predvojnička obuka", a curriculum item renamed several times as the military doctrine changed. Literally, "presoldierly training". The doctrine was the Swiss-like one of armed people, which also came from the WWII days where it was the practical way to defeat the Nazis. The country being nonexistent formally, there was no way to fund and form an armed force from above, so it was done from below, getting people self-organized.

And then that was taught in schools. We learned how to disassemble and assemble a M-48 rifle, how to undermine a bridge, do first aid, decontaminate soil, houses and people, and other guerilla tactics. Once in the 2nd year of it, we'd go to the military shooting range and waste ammunition trying to hit the bullseye.
