Gemenc Polyclinic

(Place, tavern, firm, Hungary)

The front part of the city hospital, with various specialist doctors' offices lined along the halls. IIRC, the on the ground floor there was the dentist all the way to the left, and the accident surgery (well reception only, where they may handle easy cases, anything heavier went to other buildings behind) near the entrance on the left, and then x-ray to the right. At least that's what we visited frequently, plus some on the 1st floor. The 2nd floor had the accountants, whom I saw only once, when (near the end) we arranged some kind of data transfer for their apps. The basement (had some small windows on the front side, this being the bottom of a hillside) held the server room with the damn altos in the front and the paper files on patients in the back.

The main reason I spent so much time there was, of course, PolC.

Up on the hill there was a mess hall, something copied from Frank Lloyd Right, with a huge glass wall facing southwest. Good food, but getting lunch chits was cumbersome and you had to know your days in advance. Later I even wrote a little app whereby they'd print those chits on a HP IV laser printer, from fox for Dos. It was riddled with escape codes for that printer (well the whole line of them... I think they would work on any HP laser). No free lunch even then (and I'm not waving R.A. Heinlein, because he didn't say there's no free lunch, but rather that there's no thing such as a free lunch).

For lunch we often went to the next street, into the former police mess hall, which was now privatized but still belonged to police, at least the building did. The food was good there, and there was always seconds of soup, and it was as cheap as any other place where ink pushers go for lunch.
