regal

(Translation, Yugoslavia)

Among the better misnomers. It's a cupboard, but designed for smaller apartments in novogradnja. It consists of several pieces which fit together side by side, without being actually screwed together (although some did). The downside of regular cupboards was that they were standalone pieces which created impractical corners around themselves; a good regal would take up a whole wall, leaving the rest of the space free. It would combine a bookcase, a vitrine (piece covered with glass where you'd display your wine glasses, porcelain souvenirs from your trips and other kitsch), one or two tall pieces for coats, drawers for the underwear or whatever you wanted, and your spare towels, bedsheets and whatnot in the upper sections. These things were two meters high, so they would take in a lot of stuff, while using up little space.

It also harbinged (right?) the particle board. Up to that point, furniture was made of wood, henceforth it was particle board for pretty much everything. And then it got flimsier. Which is why we try not to buy any new furniture, if possible, but rather buy old and optionally fix it.
