tozna

(Translation, Yugoslavia)

Cigarette box, but for cut tobacco and paper. I always had one on me between 1984 (when I found one to buy, in a kiosk at the Belgrade railway station, when leaving for Zagreb to get on kviskoteka) and 2010 (when I rightly supposed I just couldn't find any more tobacco to buy when we go back to Serbia).

In 2012 we did find smugglers selling the rolling tobacco on the green market. Smugglers in the old sense of the word, not that it crossed any borders and found way around the customs, but rather a way around the excise tax control. So it's sold without the state's duties, under the counter and with eyes darting over the shoulder, lest he be seen by žardinjerija or financial cops, whoever.

Then in 2017, when we were going through the stuff in and around the old house, found the 2nd one, that mom used while she was still smoking. Practically identical to the other one. Still have it, but rarely use it, this smuggled tobacco is a bit strong to smoke without a filter.

This was shot with the Agfa, in november of 2000.
