Allegedly from Poland, during that dinner with Trish (his wife) and Berix he mentioned that his father was in the polish vojska during WWII, having then moved to the UK. When I mentioned „Armia Krajowa?“ he gave me a sour look... as if I mentioned some nasty family secret and he feared I may blurt out something unmentionable.
We both had half-gray beards, more salt than pepper, at the time, and he said „it's the bloody american soap, won't wash out“.
Don't remember much more of him, Trish did most of the talking, and that's where most of the text is.
