Lena's first day in Zmaj. The same teacher as Go had. The little cretin just came to greet the kids, tell them she'll be their teacher, and then left. Left them alone for unknown length of time. Incredible. First graders, first day of school.
After classes, she was supposed to go to daycare, within the building, but nobody told her where to go; it seems nobody even knew. So someone finally saw her standing there in the middle of the hall and almost crying, and asked her what's up, and took her to daycare.
Nice start.
In GenerAll, ths opisd.prg (tables generator for any app, creates a series of Create Table commands plus code which will attempt to pull in any records from existing tables, so it was also good to distribute the current structure to existing versions of an app; also generates any metadata tables if missing, adds a call to the indexer routine and calls the generator for that one too) has got a call to cfg_read so it knows where the metadata are.
More work on the app for some electric parts shop, practically a copy of EnergoPro's. The outfit is a family shop. The folks are nice, refugees from Knin or thereabouts. Their daughter has the same smile as Mira Furlan, irresistible. Though I saw her perhaps twice, when she was bringing coffee. They also wanted fancy invoices, so I wrote a little visual app (in fox 5, the visual) which would just read the tables and generate html invoice from what was entered in the Dos app. Easier to do that than to deal directly with all those pesky PCL or whatever the ESC sequence language was for their laser printer.
One day this summer Višnja and Avai decided to organize a gathering of city's IT veterans. She provided the space (got a larger room in Dom with a small lobby to it) and calling - the hard part was how to find all those guys - and we brought the drinks and refreshments. Luckily, the room had airconditioning, as it was a scorcher outside, it didn't get below 33° all day. She and I were the hosts, and the guests included many important guys - Radoja, Big Ćale (of whom I'm not sure whether he was there; his predecessor, with whom I talked on 21-XI-1979., I remember as present), Bogdan and a dozen other guys who worked at this or that erc at the time, specially on the big Eyebyem 360 by the dragstor (mentioned on 01-IX-1986.). And it turned out that the one big event that most of them remember with awe was the „day when heads fell“. The disk on that Eyebyem just crashed, that's what it was. An ordinary mechanical failure, which happens, on the average, once in a certain number of thousands of hours in operation, there's even an acronym for that figure, MTBF. Which wasn't known at the time, the computers had an aura of divine machinery, which will keep working infinitely, it can't break by or of itself. The spirit of Ilija Čvorović was alerted immediately, and the komitet immediately went into an investigation, looking for an inserted agent, a saboteur, a culprit was sought, someone's got to do jail time for this.
Though, the data lost couldn't have been much, there simply wasn't enough space on that disk (less than 10M), couldn't hold anything important, what was lost was possibly someone's daily processing. Regardles, there was a real investigation, and they all spent two or three hectic days, because what can cops know about computers, and even if you begin to explain it they first assess whether you're trying to gaslight them, mislead or pull any trick, so they didn't hear half of what they were supposed to understand.
The matters settled only when the guy from the regional Eyebyem came, probably from Vienna, and confirmed that the cause of heads falling is unknown, possibly a power peak above defendable range, fuckit, a mechanical malfunction, you'll get a new disk at some moderate price.
